Following yesterday’s 2020 brass staff introduction, Vanguard Music and Performing Arts is happy to share yet another exciting staff announcement. Longtime member of the SCV Visual Team, Ivan De La Cruz will be stepping into the role of Corps Director for the upcoming season!
“Over the last nine years, this organization has become a home to me, and I can’t begin to express how honored I am to have this opportunity,” said De La Cruz. “Both the students and staff of the Santa Clara Vanguard hold themselves to a standard of excellence that is simply unparalleled, and I am humbled to be part of a group that is so rich in its traditions and educational values. I look forward to working in this new role and continuing to develop our program for years to come.”
De La Cruz grew up in El Paso, TX and later attended New Mexico State University, earning his Bachelors Degree in Music Education in 2004. During his academic years, Ivan became a member of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps (2001-2002) and later joined The Cavaliers for his age-out season in 2003. De La Cruz went on to serve on The Cavaliers visual staff from 2004-2010 before coming to SCV where he has been a staple of the visual team since 2011.
Outside of drum corps, Ivan is a successful educator and visual designer, having worked with numerous schools throughout Texas, Mississippi, Ohio, Arizona, and New Mexico. He has spent the last 5 years working as the Associate Director of Bands and Visual Program Director for the Dublin Coffman High School Band in Columbus, OH, and before that he held the position of Assistant Director for the Woodlands High School Marching Band in Texas. De La Cruz also enjoys serving as a marching band adjudicator, consultant, and clinician throughout the country.
As Ivan transitions into this new role, he is supported by a strong administrative team to help bring him up to speed. Julia Meadows will return for her third season as SCV Tour Manager. A native of Houston, TX she has been influential in creating logistical stability and ensuring all members and staff have the best “Vanguard Experience” possible. De La Cruz will also work closely with outgoing VMAPA Executive Director, Charles Frost, in this transition.
“As a long time staff member, Ivan knows what it means to be part of Santa Clara,” said Frost. “I have no doubt he will continue the standard of excellence we all know and love!”
