The Santa Clara Vanguard is honored to announce our 2016 Hall of Fame Inductees. They are: Bob Kalkofen, Bud Romo, Curt Moore, and Robert Carson. These four gentlemen join sixteen previously-inducted SCV Hall of Fame members, including the Corps founder, Gail R. Royer. View the complete list. Please join us in congratulating our worthy inductees and their families!
This is the first year that the vote was made by only the Hall of Fame members, completing a three year process to transfer the vote from a combination of alumni, Board of Directors, and Hall of Fame members.
We are looking forward to celebrating this milestone at our 49th Birthday Dinner, Sunday, February 28, 3:30PM – 8:00PM at the Great America Pavilion.
BOB KALKOFEN (SCV Percussion Staff: 1970-1975)
Bob Kalkofen first came to the Santa Clara Vanguard in 1970 when Gail Royer began recruiting staff from the Troopers, where Kalkofen was a member. Although he was still a member, he often dedicated his “off-time” to working alongside Fred Sanford and the SCV Snare Line. Eventually Bob joined the SCV percussion staff full time and helped build talent that would soon dominate the drum corps world.
“BUD” ROMO (SCV Facilities Manager and Volunteer: 1971-2002)
Lucian Henry Romo, more commonly known as “Bud,” first got involved with the Santa Clara Vanguard when his son joined the Corps in 1971. At that time, Bud began volunteering and helping get the Vanguard Bingo program onto its feet. Eventually, he was appointed Equipment Chairman, a role in which he greatly improved the transportation efforts of the organization. Bud was also heavily responsible for the birth of both Miss Amana food trucks (1977, 1992) and the overall success of the SCV business operation. Bud retired from his position in the organization in 1995, but continued volunteering up until 2002.
CURT MOORE (SCV Member: 1971-1975, SCV Staff: 1979-1983)
From 1971 to 1975, Curt Moore was a marching member of the Santa Clara Vanguard and won three national titles (VFW: 1971, DCI: 1973-1974). Curt was also a member of the 1974 SCV Percussion Ensemble that took first place at the Individual and Ensemble Contest in Ithaca, NY. During his time on staff, SCV won percussion titles in 1979 and took home the championship title in 1981. Curt currently serves as a teacher and mentor to percussion students across the Bay Area.
ROBERT CARSON (SCV Member: 1971-1978, SCV Staff: 1978-1980)
During his tenure with the Santa Clara Vanguard, Robert won four national championships as a marching member and four percussion trophies. He holds many individual titles as well, and has teamed with Pro Mark to create his own signature drum stick which was formerly used exclusively by SCV. Today, Rob is widely recognized as one of the world’s finest rudimental drum performers and is highly regarded as an educator, performer, and clinician.
